Science Communication

RESEARCH:

My interest in art and science within the informal learning environment inspired my research project to identify Canadian art-science initiatives. Please note that due to time constraints, data was only collected within two months, thus there are organizations I may have missed. I am always on the look out for literature on art-science initiatives including how they are structured and how they are evaluated. If you have any resources that you would like to share or have any questions or comments, please feel free to send them my way: brainbrushcat@gmail.com

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION PROJECTS:

Needle-felted Supercoiled DNA
As one of our design projects, Kat (@katmidds) and I decided to convert an audio clip about supercoiled DNA into an interactive exhibit. We wanted to show that DNA can be wound in various ways in order to fit inside the nucleus.

Active Living Science Exhibit
For our exhibit project, Kiki (@Kiki_Kirk) and I designed a bicycle exhibit to promote active living for youth. We decided to put together a map of an actual bike route along Ramsey Lake which would have checkpoints that light up so visitors could see how far they biked. It was an interesting process, full of modifications and surprises but in the end, it was wonderful to see our sketch come to life.

Short film/animation: Nerve Growth Factor Research

This was a neat project in collaboration with Laurentian University’s Faculty of Medicine graduate students. Shahira was the graduate student I worked with to produce the following short film/animation on her research in pain relief. Besides being a researcher, she was also a mother and a teacher. So, I wanted to somehow tie this altogether in my film.
